October 9 - November 22, 2015
Pablo Taboada was born in Santiago, Chile in 1955 and immigrated to Texas as a child. A largely self-taught painter, he found himself working closely with many artists in East Austin by the mid 1990s--sharing, learning, and teaching. He was an early friend and supporter of Big Medium and was integral to the inception of the East Austin Studio Tour, which he participated in every year after.
“I wanted to paint Texas before it was gone”
Taboada was a prolific painter of Texas landscapes, as well as portraits and still lifes, always carrying a striking tenderness with his gift for realism. While his landscapes were most widely shown around Texas and the United States, Big Medium’s exhibition attempts to represent the breadth of his practice. Made possible by the generosity of his wife, Paula Salinas, Pablo Taboada: 1955-2015 offers a representative sampling of his roughly 20 years of painting in Texas.
Pablo Taboada earned a BA from the University of Texas at Austin. His work has been exhibited throughout Texas as well as internationally. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the University of Texas at San Antonio and the South Texas Museum of Art in Corpus Christi. He died at the age of 59 in Austin, Texas.
