Carl Brunson
Describe your artistic style in three words.
Pragmatic, emotive, statement-piece
What's inspiring you right now?
Lately, I've been looking at men's runway fashion shows like A-COLD-WALL (ACW) and Ventements as inspiration. Fashion designers will write liner notes describing the concept(s) behind a runway collection—giving insight into why they used specific fabrics, cuts, and colors. This amount of planning and attention to detail is something I'm greatly inspired by.
I've recently created a collection of work (i.e. The Heritage Collection), that focuses on a singular theme. I plan to release future bodies of work in similar thematic groupings, as well.
What do you do when you're feeling uninspired?
Physical activity away from making art re-inspires me. I think staying creative/inspired requires having a functioning and healthy mind and body—it's all wholistic. So, I try to work out every day. The gym has become my refuge. Since my art studio is in my home, going to the gym gets me away from any current projects. It gives me the space to work through solutions and come up with new ideas.
Tell us something unique about your process?
I approach making art more like an engineer than a traditional artist. My process is about creating rough mocks and then determining how to execute those designs on canvas. I apply paint to a canvas only when I have a concept of the final piece. Although, I do leave room for spontaneity during the execution phase.
What advice do you have for other artists?
Express your uniqueness. Spend time discovering all things that make you you. Take note of your likes and dislikes, your beliefs, and your desires. Then boldly create work that expresses that. Push yourself not to be affected by trends or popular opinion.
