Suzanne Koett
Describe your artistic style in three words.
Empathetic, honest, and intuitive
What's inspiring you right now?
The fact that we have all been in our homes practicing social distancing since around March 12th shows the love we have for each other - for those we know and those we don't know. For awhile I've wondered what an interdependent culture would feel like as opposed to a culture deeply rooted in individualism. Documenting and experiencing this historical time makes me question who we will be as a society and as a country post pandemic.
What do you do when you're feeling uninspired?
I listen to music when I feel uninspired or blocked creatively. That always seems to help. I'll often make art based off of entire albums or songs.
Tell us something unique about your process.
I've gone back to my photography roots and have been photographing using only film the past four years. Mostly 6x7cm film. It slows me down, helps me connect with my subjects more, allows me to be more intentional, and is generally overall a more tactile experience that requires patience and precision. Not to mention the joy I feel developing my own negatives or getting my color negatives back from Holland Photo is maybe my ultimate pure joy. Teenage Suzanne is stoked.
What advice do you have for other artists?
Make art that speaks authentically to you first and foremost. Revel in the process of making. After that it becomes for other people.
Anything else you'd like to share?
I hope everyone stays safe and healthy.
