Have you ever thought about approaching a museum that is not art-centric? Have you considered taking your art outside? “Art in the Garden” will cover a very brief history of art in garden spaces, exploring the connection between natural and cultivated gardens with various forms of art. We will focus on the need for contemporary art in the garden and how to answer this need.
Dawn E. Hewitt is the Director of Community Engagement at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin, coming from just up the road at UT’s Blanton Museum of Art. While at the Blanton, Dawn was integral to planning and executing the many events surrounding the opening of Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin. Prior to joining the Blanton Museum, she worked in nonprofit focusing on development, marketing and events including exhibitions, auctions and arts programs. In 2015, she co-founded ARTiculation, an Austin based artist collective where Dawn focused on logistics and curation of group shows. Dawn is also an Adjunct, Assistant Professor at Austin Community College, teaching art appreciation, and is offering a summer of 2022 study abroad in Vienna, Austria.
Dawn has that rare combination of being both a critical and creative thinker, skills that were honed while earning a bachelor’s in art history, with a certificate in European studies, at The University of Texas at Austin and a master’s in art history, with a focus on museum studies and certificate in women and gender studies, from Texas Christian University.
As the Director of Community Engagement at the Wildflower Center, Dawn creates connections with the community through events, art exhibitions and IDEA initiatives. She focuses her work on the belief that people can be brought together through shared experiences. She believes that, by creating compelling, thoughtful spaces, one can change the world in positive ways.
