An island represents a detached form surrounded by space, an oasis is a pleasant area in the midst of a difficult space, and a mirage is an optical illusion; the work of Michael Krueger, Kathleen McShane, and Barbara Weissberger occupies a place that is simultaneously all three.
Krueger, McShane and Weissberger explore images and objects in ways that challenge notions of representation, often employing the languages of sculpture, drawing, painting, photography at once.
The three artists live and work in the very different environments of Midwest Pennsylvania, Southeast Texas, and Prairie state Kansas, yet continue to cross paths; McShane and Weissberger met while at MacDowell Colony residencies in New Hampshire and Krueger and McShane got to know one another at the Frans Masereel Residency in Belgium. Among many exhibitions, all three artists have exhibited at the Drawing Center in New York, Krueger is represented by the Steven Zevitas Gallery in Los Angeles, McShane by Paul Kotula Projects in Detroit, and Weissberger is a Guggenheim recipient
Michael Krueger works in a variety of media including, painting, drawing, printmaking, animation, and ceramics. His ideas dictate the media and he floats freely between them. Krueger’s artwork has been included in over 300 exhibitions, and recent solo exhibitions include prestigious venues such as: Steven Zevitas Gallery, Boston, MA; Sunday L.E.S., New York, NY; Blackburn 20/20, New York, NY; and Haw Contemporary, Kansas City, MO. Important group exhibitions include, The Drawing Center, New York, NY; KRETS Gallery, Malmo, Sweden; The Denver Museum of Art, Denver, CO; Planthouse, New York, NY; Glasgow Print Studio, Scotland, UK; Adam Baumgold, New York, NY; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Philadelphia, PA; and the Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, CA. In 2012 Michael made animations for the feature length documentary—Drop City—the film has screened at 27 festivals (to date) including, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; MoMA PS1, New York, NY; Bosch Art Film Festival, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Experimenta Design Biennale, Lisbon, Portugal; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, CO.
Kathleen McShane is an artist whose primary medium is drawing, in a broad definition of that term. Major benchmarks include work shown at the Drawing Center in NY; work purchased for the collection of Werner Kramarsky; a papered room installation at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in CT; exhibitions at Gallery Joe in Philadelphia, and at Susanne Hilberry and Paul Kotula galleries in metropolitan Detroit; and residencies at MacDowell colony, Millay Colony and Cites des Artes in Paris.
Barbara Weissberger’s work has been shown at such venues as the Drawing Center, MoMA PS1, DUMBO Art Center, and White Columns in NY; GRIDSPACE, Brooklyn, NY; Hallwalls, Buffalo, NY; in Pittsburgh at The Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, and Artist Image Resource; Artspace New Haven in New Haven, CT; the Holter Museum (solo, catalogue) in Helena, MT and ADA Gallery and the Harnett Museum of Art, University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. She is a participant in the inaugural Open Sessions at The Drawing Center (NY, 2014 – 2016). Grants and fellowships include a Guggenheim Fellowship, residencies at The Camargo Foundation (France), the Hambidge Center (NEA DIstinguished Fellow 2013), Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus (Germany), the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, the Ucross Foundation, VCCA, and the Montana Artists Refuge. She divides her time between Pittsburgh and New York.
