ABOUT THE ARTIST

Alejandra Almuelle was born in Arequipa, Peru. She spent few years in Pizac in the Sacred Valley of Cuzco, a center for ceramic making. Peru is a country in which the abundance of clay has made this medium a language of artistic expression. Clay is its own idiom, and being there, she began to speak it. After she moved to Austin, she started working with clay. Addressing the functionality of the medium as well as its sculptural expression has been equally important for her. She has participated in art fairs, galleries and museums with both pottery and sculpture.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Adrian Armstrong is a multidisciplinary artist from Omaha, NE now living and working out of Austin, TX. Armstrong received his BFA from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln in 2014. His work expands throughout different mediums such as music, painting, and printmaking, but his primary medium of choice is ballpoint pen.

Through portrait and figurative practices, Armstrong’s work explores black identity and how the black body is perceived in predominantly White American spaces. He aims to portray what it means to be an African American living in modern America. Often using himself as an “every man” symbol, Armstrong’s work touches on topics such as depression within the black community, systematic oppression, and identity erasure; but on the other side of the spectrum explores, nostalgia, growth, and success.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Xavier Schipani was born in 1984 in Washington, D.C. He studied at the Center for Arts and Culture in AIX-en-Provence and received a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Schipani is an Austin-based Transgender artist, who has focused his practice on creating large painting installations that explore the boundaries of gender, body politics, sexuality, and queer identity. His unique voice and personal connection to the themes of his work create intimate experiences in combination with a larger-than-life scale to establish a contrast between the work and the viewer. He continues to investigate fear and anger, masculinity as performance, and the ambiguity of what makes a man.
