Hillary Cumberworth
Describe your artistic style in three words.
Abstract, empathetic, subtle.
What's inspiring you right now?
The Pandemic for sure has inspired my current body of work! It has been interesting to see interpersonal relationships grow and feel strain from the forced distance and inclusion. We are stronger together but sometimes you have to stand alone to see your own strength.
What do you do when you're feeling uninspired?
When I feel uninspired I check out what artists near and far are up to get my mind jumpstarted. I sometimes take a look at my older work and pinpoint imperfections that I can correct and grow from... and I call friends to just chat, have a good laugh and recharge.
Tell us something unique about your process.
Every Vessel I create starts out as a slab built cylinder. However, through the manipulation process each piece turns out unique and one of a kind, just like each one of us. Life shapes, molds and changes everyone to the person that exists today.
What advice do you have for other artists?
Just keep creating and making art. Through the process of creating you will grow, learn and fine tune your practice and your artistic voice.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Laugh, don't take yourself too seriously and above all... Be kind!
Hillary’s experience of growing up in a large family and exposure to other people and cultures has certainly shaped the themes of her art. The sculptures this native Austinite creates capture and embody moments in life that impact us and alter how others perceive us on the outside.
