Cande Aguilar
Describe your artistic style in three words.
Authentic, STX-border, ART.
What's inspiring you right now?
I'm always absorbing everything: sight, sound, thoughts and feelings; lately I've been listening to the philosopher Alan Watts.
What do you do when you're feeling uninspired?
“Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.” ― Pablo Picasso
Tell us something unique about your process.
As I do in many of my paintings, I juxtaposed mainstream pop culture icons, and/or appropriate from art history to form a sense of belonging because, in this region, we are not really considered “American” or even “Mexican”… it's kind of like living in a cultural limbo.
What advice do you have for other artists?
Trust your inner self, go with what you feel you want to create and figure out how to best execute your vision. Work, work, work!
Anything else you’d like to share?
During these times of uncertainty, lockdown, and social unrest, I've become more in-tune with my intuition. I am currently putting the finishing touches on a show that will be exhibited on the virtual gallery app (D Emptyspace) The exhibition will consist of nine paintings all painted on found signage panels. Very excited about these works, I feel they are particularly relevant to our lives at this moment.
